Notre Dame to close for up to 6 years - rector

The rector of Notre Dame Cathedral, Bishop Patrick Chauvet, said on Wednesday he will close the temple for "five to six years," as it will need to undergo extensive and detailed restoration following the fire which collapsed its roof and spire. Chauvet stated that "a segment" of the church was weakened by the blaze.

The cleric explained that he spoke with local businesses before taking the decision, however, he didn't offer a plan for Notre Dame's 67 employees.

An international contest to reconstruct the destroyed parts of the state-owned UNESCO world heritage site will be organized, taking into account "techniques and challenges of our times." Over $1 billion in donations has been collected for the effort so far, with notable domestic and international companies contributing to rebuilding one of Paris' most famous landmarks.
