NZ opted out of security pact with US, UK Australia - PM

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern (pictured) said that her country opted out of the tripartite security pact comprising the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom (AUKUS).

She explained that the move did not change Wellington's role in the so-called Five Eyes alliance, an intelligence-sharing arrangement between the aforementioned English-speaking democracies and Canada. "New Zealand's position in relation to the prohibition of nuclear-powered vessels in our waters remains unchanged," Ardern noted.

Under the new agreement, the US and the UK will attempt to acquire nuclear-powered submarines for Australia.
