Orban's Fidesz party leaves largest group in EP

Hungary's ruling party Fidesz announced on Wednesday that it is leaving the European People's Party (EPP), a center-right political group in the European parliament, which is the largest fraction within the electorate.

"I hereby inform you that Fidesz MEPs resign their membership in the EPP Group," Hungarian Prime Minister and head of Fidesz Viktor Orban wrote in a letter to EPP's leader Manfred Weber.

The move leaves the EPP with 175 members in the legislature, which means it is still the largest group in the 705-seat parliament.
