Over 700 EasyJet pilots at risk of redundancy - union

British Airline Pilots' Association (BALPA), the trade union for pilots in the United Kingdom, announced on Tuesday that it has been informed by EasyJet plc "that 727 of their pilots are at risk of redundancy."

As the airline employs a total of 2,300 pilots in the UK, the union is "shocked" and considers the decision illogical. "EasyJet paid £174 million out to shareholders, got agreements to furlough staff to protect cash, got £600 million from the government, has boasted of having £2.4 billion in liquidity" so BALPA sees this as an "excessive over-reaction," the union's General Secretary Brian Strutton said in a statement.

"BALPA repeats its call for the government to step in, provide a strategy and back a moratorium on job losses while all stakeholders sort out a holistic way forward for the whole aviation sector," Strutton pointed out.
