Over 7K villages in China locked down amid Delta outbreak - report

Nearly 7,500 villages in the greater Nanjing area of China's eastern Jiangsu province have been placed under lockdown to slow the spread of a new variant of COVID-19, The Global Times reported citing local authorities.

After the first case of the fast-spreading Delta strain was confirmed at the Nanjing airport in July, the city became the epicentre of one of the largest outbreaks to hit China in months.

Last week, local health officials in Nanjing have set up checkpoints for mass testing and reportedly suspended flights being that nearly 200 people were diagnosed with the variant in just 10 days.
