Oxford's vaccine trial has 50,000 people - scientist

The trial of Oxford University's and AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine involves some 50,000 participants, Oxford Vaccine Group's Andrew Pollard told BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday.

The pediatric infection and immunity professor stressed that the size of the trial is "critical" to ensure the safety of the vaccine. Pollard went on to say that the number of COVID-19 cases will be an important factor in determining when the vaccine will be available. However, he predicted that the ongoing trials could provide enough data on vaccine safety and efficiency that could then be submitted to regulators before the end of the year.

Oxford University is working on the COVID-19 vaccine alongside AstraZeneca, which announced earlier in the day that it started a trial on a possible new treatment for the disease. Only Russia has registered a COVID-19 vaccine so far, but the vaccine is yet to be mass-tested.
