Pakistan PM: World must prevent ethnic cleansing in Kashmir

The prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan (pictured), urged the "international community" to prevent a possible ethnic cleansing and massacre in Jammu and Kashmir, pointing to "[India's Prime Minister Narendra] Modi's earlier ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Gujarat."

India recently revoked Kashmir's special constitutional status and imposed a special regime in the Muslim-dominated state, to which Pakistan responded by downgrading bilateral relations and suspending trade relations. Kashmir has been a point of dispute between the two countries for decades.

Khan tweeted: "Will world silently witness another Srebrenica-type massacre & ethnic cleansing of Muslims in IOK? I want to warn international community if it allows this to happen, it will have severe repercussions & reactions in the Muslim world setting off radicalisation & cycles of violence."

Earlier in the day, in a speech on India's independence day, Prime Minister Modi stated that his country is "proud" that "One Nation, One Constitution" spirit has become a reality. He added that "the old arrangement in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh encouraged corruption, nepotism but there was injustice when it came to rights of women, children, Dalits, tribal communities."
