Paris stores looted as new Yellow Vest riots break out

Several stores along the Champ Elysses avenue in Paris were looted as police clashed with Yellow Vest protestors for the 18th straight weekend, media reported on Saturday.

Groups of masked protesters threw stones at police defending the Arc de Triomphe war memorial and vandalized premises including a Boss menswear store and the gourmet Fouquet's restaurant. Police responded with teargas and water cannons but could not disperse more hardline protesters who had set up burning barricades. The riots were notable for their violence following weeks of steadily declining participation figures.

The riots were held to mark the end of two months of public debates called by French President Emmanuel Macron, which had the aim of providing voters with an outlet to make their complaints known and suggest policy changes. However, Yellow Vest protestors have dismissed the debates as a smoke screen.
