Pelosi: US House to pass railway deal tomorrow

Outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi confirmed on Tuesday that legislators would vote tomorrow to approve a tentative contract deal reached between the White House and railway unions in September in order to prevent strikes that would cause massive disruptions across the United States.

"We must avoid a strike," Pelosi told reporters following a meeting between President Joe Biden and top Congressional leaders at the White House. All 12 railway worker unions must ratify the agreement by December 9 once Congress passes it for the strikes to be avoided.

Commenting on the notion, Biden expressed confidence that the US won't see massive strikes of railway workers. "Congress, I think, has to act to prevent it. It's not an easy call, but I think we have to do it. The economy is at risk," Biden said. Workers are requesting the option to take leave to recover from an illness or care for a sick family member.
