Pence: Hong Kong's integrity condition for US-China trade deal

United States Vice President Mike Pence conditioned on Monday the trade deal with China with Beijing's respect for the integrity of Hong Kong and its laws, on the basis of the Sino-British declaration of 1985 which allowed for the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997 under certain conditions.

The administration in Washington will continue to urge both the demonstrators in Hong Kong and the government in Beijing to resolve their disagreements in a peaceful manner. "It will be much harder for us to make a deal if something violent happens in Hong Kong," he stressed.

In the past 17 years, Beijing has used an arsenal of policies moving in the opposite direction of free trade and liberal capitalism, including industrial subsidies, intellectual policy theft and trade barriers, the vice president stated. The time has come, he continued, for China to live by the rules of international commerce.
