Pence: Trump spoke to Macron, SDF leadership

United States Vice President Mike Pence said he would work to establish a ceasefire in Syria during his visit to Ankara and that the sanctions against Turkey are only the beginning. He revealed President Donald Trump spoke on the phone with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron as well as the Syrian Democratic Forces.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan promised the US commander-in-chief not to attack Kobani. The border town has almost been obliterated in 2014 and 2015 in a siege by the Islamic State but defenders led by the mostly Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) pushed back the enemy. The militia later became the main component of the SDF.

There were no decisions regarding the scheduled arrival by Erdogan next month to meet the US president, Pence asserted. Trump "pressed" the Turkish leader "very strongly" to immediately halt the invasion, he said.
