Philippines' daily COVID-19 cases jump to 3,561

The Philippines' health department reported on Thursday 3,561 new coronavirus infections amounting to a total of 119,460 and surpassing Indonesia's reported numbers of 1,882 daily and a total of 118,753 to become the most-affected country in Southeast Asia.

The ease of lockdown measures in the country came in June after reports of its economy experiencing a recession with a record 16.5% GDP contraction. Anthony Leachon, a medical doctor and former adviser to the government task force in charge of the fight against COVID-19 said: "I think we opened the economy too soon. It should have been gradual and phased. Mobility is a big factor in transmission. I think that led to the increasing cases because we were not able to establish the health care capacity at an early date."

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte's spokesperson Harry Roque in response to the director's criticism accented the importance of "the delicate balancing act between public health and economic health."
