Pompeo: Russia actively undermines US sanctions against N.Korea

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Russia of working actively to undermine US sanctions against North Korea. "Russia has actively attempted to undermine the UN Security Council resolutions, the work of the 1718 Committee, the committee at the UN that evaluates compliance with sanctions, by attempting to change the language there," Pompeo told reporters.

Pompeo added he hopes the committee of experts created under UN Security Council resolution 1718, will remain independent and report on the facts and not allow a single country to draft language. "I hope they will publish the original document that they intended to publish, which shows – it shows clear activities related to sanctions and sanctions violations. It’s important; it’s the date set that underlays not American sanctions but the world’s sanctions from the UN Security Council," he said.

US top diplomat insisted that the US is as committed as ever to enforce UN sanctions in order to achieve full denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. He added that "that it needs to be done in a way that the world can see that there’s been this strategic change in Chairman Kim’s core understanding of how he will provide a better future for the North Korean people."

Earlier, US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley accused Russia of pressuring the experts to change UN report on North Korea sanctions. Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said Russia delayed the publication of the report due to disagreements over certain elements of the report.
