Pompeo urges Gulf states to end Qatar blockade

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called for an end to the blockade imposed on Qatar by its neighbors in the Persian Gulf, according to media reports on Sunday.

Speaking in the Qatari capital Doha on Sunday, Pompeo said that the dispute had "gone on for too long" and that "we're all more powerful when we're working together." He also signed a memorandum of understanding with Qatar for the expansion and renovation of the US's Al Udeid military base located in the country. Finally, he announced plans for the formation of the Strategic Alliance of the Middle East (MESA), which would include the Persian Gulf countries as well as Egypt and Jordan.

Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates cut diplomatic ties with Qatar in June 2017 over what they said was Qatar’s "support for armed terrorist activities." Pompeo is currently on a tour of the Middle East as part of Washington's initiative to reassert itself in the region and counter Iran's influence.
