Pope Francis admitted to hospital for surgery
Pope Francis has been admitted to the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome for abdominal surgery, the Holy See's official press service announced on Wednesday.
According to the statement, His Holiness will undergo a "laparotomy and abdominal wall surgery under general anesthesia" later in the day. It added the pope is expected to stay at the hospital for a few days "to allow for a normal post-operative course and full functional recovery."
Prior to his check-in, Pope Francis held his weekly General Audience. Not that long ago, he was hospitalized due to a pulmonary infection, which forced him to miss the Way of the Cross ceremony on Good Friday.
