Portugal appoints Centeno as central bank governor

Former Eurogroup President Mario Centeno (pictured) will be the new Governor of the Bank of Portugal, the country's government announced on Thursday.

Centeno served as the Eurogroup's president since 2017, and as Portugal Minister of Finance since 2015, but has announced he would step down from both functions on July 13 and 15, respectively.

The central bank's Vice-Governor Elisa Ferreira said Centeno is a suitable candidate for the position. In an interview with the Lusa agency, Ferreira stated that he is an influential and well-known person in Europe, but also that Centeno's "profile suggests the alignment, rather than a conflict of interests."
