Portugal extends lockdown as COVID deaths, cases hit record high

Portugal announced a series of new lockdown measures on Thursday after local health authorities announced new records for both deaths and cases of COVID-19 registered in a single day. Authorities noted that the jump in cases came as a result of the spread of the British COVID-19 variant which now makes up 20% of all coronavirus cases in Portugal.

All schools will be shut as of Friday and distance learning will also be canceled for 15 days. Businesses will also be closed over the next two weeks while all non-urgent court cases will be suspended.

Portugal registered 13,544 new cases of COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, bringing its coronavirus case tally to 595,149. Meanwhile, the number of deaths rose by 219 since the previous update. So far, the country registered 9,686 COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
