Possible links between AZ jab and blood clots - EMA

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) revealed on Wednesday it had found a "possible link" between AstraZeneca PLC and Oxford University's vaccine against COVID-19 and "very rare cases of unusual blood clots combined with low levels of blood platelets" in people who received it but insisted the jab's "overall benefits [...] outweigh the risks of side effects."

The EMA noted most of the cases reported "occurred in women under 60 years of age within 2 weeks of vaccination" and stressed the currently available evidence failed to confirm "specific risk factors." The agency advised healthcare workers to continue giving the vaccine to people of all ages but to be aware of possible side effects.

"EMA's scientific assessment underpins the safe and effective use of COVID-19 vaccines," it concluded. "As for all vaccines, EMA will continue to monitor the vaccine's safety and effectiveness and provide the public with the latest information."
