Potential after-furlough job losses hard to estimate - UK secretary

British Chief Secretary to the Treasury Simon Clarke admitted on Thursday it is "impossible" to predict how many people in the United Kingdom will lose their jobs after the government's job retention scheme ends.

"Furlough has protected 11.6 million jobs in total during the course of its time — at some point, you have to end these emergency measures; they are extraordinary, and they are extraordinary for a reason," Clarke told Sky News. "People's jobs will be created just as some have very sadly been lost; that is the part of the process of ending this crisis and going back to normal."

The government's furlough scheme, introduced by Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak, will end at the end of September. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Boris Johnson's spokesperson confirmed the program will not be extended beyond that deadline.
