Putin, Biden stress need to avoid nuclear war

United States President Joe Biden told his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, in a phone conversation that Washington and Moscow could be vital in ensuring world peace and lowering the risk of nuclear proliferation and confrontation, Putin's advisor Yuri Ushakov told the press.

In the talks, Biden emphasized that "a nuclear war cannot be started, nor can it be won," understanding that the US and Russia have accumulated the largest nuclear potential in the world, according to Ushakov.

Biden voiced concerns over Russian troop build-ups near the border with Ukraine and called for a de-escalation of tensions, admitting that the White House has no intent to deploy offensive weapons in case Moscow made a move.
