Putin congratulates Biden on winning US elections

Russian President Vladimir Putin officially congratulated United States President-elect Joe Biden on his victory in the 2020 elections on Tuesday, after the Electoral College had awarded him more than the 270 votes needed to take office.

Putin noted the relations between Moscow and Washington had "special responsibility for global security and stability" and that together they could "really contribute to solving many problems [...] despite their differences." He expressed his optimism their cooperation would be based on "mutual respect," which would "serve the interests" of the entire world.

The Kremlin initially refused to formally congratulate Biden on his victory before the official results were revealed, with Putin explaining Russia was waiting for all the formalities regarding the elections to be concluded.
