Putin: EU must help Syria restore its economy

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday that the European Union must "help Syria restore its economy" if it wants civilians to return to their homes. During a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, he said the EU should also "waive the restrictions on delivering humanitarian aid" to the government-controlled areas. Merkel said her country supports the initiative by the United Nations to "start the constitutional process" in Syria. She also expressed willingness to help with the political process which could lead to the peace in the Middle Eastern country.

The two leaders discussed the economic partnership between their countries. Putin stated that "hundreds of thousands of jobs" in Russia and Germany depend on their cooperation, as well as that it is impossible to "resolve old problems without dialogue." Merkel also stressed dialogue as a key factor in improving bilateral relations, stating that the countries' partnership is not threatened and that it is reinforced by their mutual strategic interests. Putin mentioned a possible law which would protect Russian economy against sanctions, saying that it needs to be balanced and it "shouldn't deliver any blows" to Russia.
