Putin inks criminal code amendments

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a set of amendments to Russia's Criminal Code that increases punishment for soldiers surrendering to the enemy as well as those deserting a military unit during a period of mobilization.

The move comes after the Kremlin announced a partial mobilization earlier this week.

In particular, the law introduces the concepts of "mobilization", "martial law" and "wartime" into the Criminal Code. For both deserting and looting, Russians could face from five to ten years in prison, while disobeying orders during martial law or during wartime could result in imprisonment for two to three years.
