Putin pledges to help S. Africa fight Omicron - Kremlin

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with South Africa's head of state, Cyril Ramaphosa, underlying Moscow's readiness to help the African country tackle the spread of the coronavirus' Omicron variant, Kremlin revealed on Saturday.

"The heads of state agreed to join forces in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, especially in light of the identification of a new omicron strain," Kremlin's announcement read, as translated by TASS.

Russian health authorities still haven't registered an infection with the new variant, while two people who tested positive upon arriving in Moscow from South Africa are awaiting the variant sequencing results.
