Putin: Russia not planning nationwide lockdown

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday his government is not planning to introduce a nationwide lockdown due to the spike in COVID-19 infections.

"We are not planning to introduce total restrictive measures and launch a so-called nationwide lockdown when the economy and business are practically completely stopped," Putin stated at the Russia Calling! forum.

The comments come on the day Russia reported its largest daily rise in coronavirus cases and deaths with 17,717 new infections and 366 fatalities confirmed over the past 24 hours. Russia has imposed tougher measures amid the new surge in infections, which include making face masks obligatory in some public places and recommending bars and restaurants to close earlier.
