Putin: Russian relations with Japan are improving

The relationship between Russia and Japan is improving, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday in Moscow as he met Tokyo's Shigeru Kitamura, who heads the Japanese government's Cabinet Intelligence and Research Office.

Putin noted: "I would like to note that ties between our nations steadily developing and we are very encouraged."

The Russian president's remarks come as the two countries aim to come closer to a solution on the Kuril Islands sovereignty dispute which has overshadowed their relations for decades. In September, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called on Putin to finally sign a peace treaty.
