Putin: Syria must be free from foreign military presence

Syria must be free from foreign military presence, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a press conference on Tuesday. He warned that Turkey military operations in Syria must not allow for ISIS to exploit the situation. The Russian president also added that Moscow recognizes Turkey's need to guarantee its own national security.

Speaking alongside his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Putin stressed that Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected at all time. He accused "outside powers" of "artificially escalating tensions" in northern Syria and called on Kurds and the Syrian government to start talks.

Putin also stressed the importance of establishing a constitutional committee and said its first meeting wil be held on October 29 and October 30 in Geneva.
