Qantas updates Airbus order with 36 A321XLRs

Australian airline Qantas Group said on Wednesday that it amended its existing Airbus order to include 36 A321XLR planes, bringing the total number of aircraft it will buy to 109.

The updated order will see 26 of the company’s existing A321neo orders converted to A321XLRs and add another 10 XLRs. "We already know the A320 is a great aircraft and this new variant can fly further and more efficiently than any other single-aisle jet on the market," Qantas CEO Alan Joyce stated. He added that the group is yet to decide if the planes will be used by Qantas Airways or its low-cost airline Jetstar and whether they will replace older airplanes or will "be used for growth."

The first deliveries from the Airbus order will begin between mid-2020 and mid-2022, when Jetstar will get 18 A321LR aircraft, while the delivery of the XLRswill start from 2024, the Qantas Group noted.
