Report: China seeks to separate trade, security in US talks

China is reportedly seeking to narrow the extent of the ongoing trade talks with the United States in an effort to break the current stalemate, according to people with knowledge of the matter cited by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

Separating trade issues from those concerning national security would, in Beijing's opinion, help the two sides find a way out of the months-long deadlock and settle some of the more pressing issues first. According to sources, such a twin-track approach would also require the setting up of a separate team to deal with the matters of national security.

The shift in China's attitude comes in the light of the latest rapprochement in relations between the two nations, following the US's decision to postpone the scheduled tariff increase on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods by 15 days and China's move to exclude certain American products from levies.
