Report: Japan to tariff $409M worth of US goods

Japanese government is planning a response to the metal tariffs imposed by the United States in March, the country's state broadcaster NHK reported on Thursday, with a measure that would hit $409 million worth of American goods with import tariffs. This would reportedly be the equivalent value to the steel and aluminum which were affected by recently imposed trade barriers by Washington.

The broadcaster added that Tokyo will notify the World Trade Organization (WTO) this week of the measure that's in the works, as required by the rules of the trade organization.

Unlike China and the EU, Japan hasn't yet responded to America's trade barriers with an official position. The plan to introduce retaliatory tariffs could be seen as an attempt to secure an exemption, alongside EU, South Korea, Mexico and Canada.
