Report: US mulls first nuclear test since 1992

Officials in the Trump administration explored the possibility of conducting the first American nuclear test since 1992 last week amid talk of similar tests being carried out by Russia and China, according to sources cited by the Washington Post.

A senior administration official said the United States could conduct a "rapid test" in order to gain leverage in seeking a trilateral nuclear deal, while the conversations are reportedly ongoing.

Last year, Washinton pulled out of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), which was signed by former US President Ronald Reagan and then-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987.
