Retail sales in Japan rise by 5% in April

Japan's retail sales went under investors' expectations in April, despite rising by 5% on an annual basis to land at ¥13.2 trillion (~$94.4 billion), according to a report released on Wednesday by the country's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry.

On a monthly basis, the sales value went down by 1.2%. The total value of commercial sales amounted to ¥48.6 trillion, with 1.4% more goods sold compared to April 2022.

Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted value of sales in the wholesale industry reached ¥35.4 trillion, marking a year-on-year increase of 0.1%.
