Retail sales in Japan slightly higher in March

Japan's retail sales were up 0.2% in March compared to February, the country's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said in a new release. On a yearly basis, retail trade grew by 1.0%.

Compared to February, machinery and equipment gained the most, 5.5%, followed by motor vehicles whose sales were up by 2.3%. Food & beverage and fuel were both 1.6% higher, while fabrics, apparel and accessories gained 0.8%. Fuel was also up 0.6%. Nonstore retailers and general merchandise fell in February, losing 1.7% and 0.7% respectively.
