Rio de Janeiro cancels New Year celebrations

Rio de Janeiro's officials canceled public celebrations in that city for the forthcoming New Year's Eve amid the worries concerning the emergence of the new strain of COVID-19, Omicron.

Mayor Eduardo Paes's administration added that, unlike the ones outside, private gatherings will still be allowed.

The announcement comes shortly after Brazil became the second country in the world, after the United States, to record more than 600,000 fatalities linked to COVID-19.
