Riyadh committed to Khashoggi probe - Pompeo

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday that Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to the investigation into the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and holding his killers accountable for the crime, AFP reported. The news comes amid Pompeo's Middle East visit primarily for talks on conflicts in Syria and Yemen. Saudi Arabia was Pompeo's last stop on the trip, as he had to cancel his visit to Kuwait to attend a family funeral. The official will fly back to the US after visiting Oman.

In Riyadh, Pompeo met with Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, where he stressed the significance of the Khashoggi murder investigation. Secretary Pompeo "emphasized the importance of Saudi Arabia continuing its investigation into the murder of Jamal Khashoggi in order to ascertain facts, assess information, and hold those responsible accountable," the State Department said in a statement.

Earlier, the Saudi Public Prosecutor requested death sentence against at least five of the eleven suspects accused of taking part in Khashoggi's murder. The prosecutor also asked Turkish authorities for all the evidence collected in the investigation.
