Russia accuses U.S. of sponsoring terrorists

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said on Tuesday that the United States is supporting terrorist groups in Syria after Washington signed a law permitting the supply of air-defense systems to the Syrian opposition, according to TASS.

She pointed out that the U.S. must be aware that the weapons provided by Washington will end up being used by terrorists. Zakharova also called the move "hostile" and accused Washington of intentionally aiding and sponsoring the al-Nusra front, previously known as al-Qaida in Syria.

“This can hardly be called otherwise than aiding and abetting terrorists,” the spokesperson claimed. She also noted that such a decision by the U.S. “poses a direct threat” to the Russian forces and its diplomatic mission in Syria.

Last week, U.S. President Barack Obama signed a bill which approves a budget of $611 billion for the country’s military in 2017.
