Russia expresses concern over NATO spending increase

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed concern on Wednesday about NATO's plans to boost its defense spending but insisted Russia will not be dragged into a military spending race with the alliance.

"We see that NATO mostly indulges in containment and expansionist activities in relation to our country. This cannot but cause concern. Such decisions in favor of an increase of NATO’s budget merely confirm this," Peskov stated.

The remarks come after NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg noted during a summit in London that the alliance's defense spending is set to increase by $130 billion in 2020 and US President Donald Trump called on members to further increase their spending by contributing 4% of national GDP to their defense budgets. Meanwhile, Russia's President Vladimir Putin claimed NATO's expansion poses a "threat" to Russia.
