Russia fines Twitter for not removing 'illegal data'

Moscow's Tagansky District Magistrates' Court fined on Friday Twitter Inc. 3.2 million rubles, approximately $42,000, for not removing what the Russian Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media, also known as Roskomnadzor, described as illegal data from its platform.

Roskomnadzor accused the company of violating Russia's censorship law by not removing information prohibited in that country, such as "child pornography, materials inciting children to suicide, and advertising the acquisition, production, and use of drugs" and initially limited the platform's traffic speed. The agency also threatened to ban Twitter from the country in case illegal data was not removed.

The agency has so far filed three complaints about Twitter's failure to delete the aforementioned content. The court passed this sentence for just one and will consider the other two cases later in the day.
