Russia: NATO must give guarantees on expansion

Russian President Vladimir Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov (pictured right) remarked on Friday that Moscow needs a written guarantee the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is not going to expand eastwards as it can no longer count on the veracity of the spoken ones.

Ushakov stressed that NATO has been giving "verbal assurances" for years to both the Soviet Union and Russia, but those turned out to be "worthless, although some fixation of these statements was done." "In what form that document will be, it is difficult to say; the main thing is that these are agreements fixed on paper," he said.

Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov condemned NATO's "further expansion to the east" as a threat to his country's security. Previously, the alliance warned Moscow it will face consequences if it launches military action against Ukraine.
