Russia protests over Yoon's speech at UNGA
Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrey Rudenko warned South Korea's Ambassador to Russia Lee Do-hoon that Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol's (pictured) comments regarding Russia could seriously affect relations between Seoul and Moscow, according to a statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Friday.
"The Russian side drew attention to the unfriendly statements of the President of the Republic of Korea Yun Suk-yeol addressed to Russia during his speech at the high-level segment of the 78th session of the UNGA, causing serious damage to Russian-South Korean relations," the statement reads. The ministry also accused Seoul of pretending to build its policy on Russia upon "speculation and conjecture."
On Wednesday, Yoon stated that an arms deal between Russia and North Korea is unacceptable and would mean a "direct provocation" against Seoul, especially since Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, "entrusted as the ultimate guardian of world peace."
