Russia to withdraw troops from Ukraine border by May

Russia's Defense Minister Sergey Shoygu announced on Thursday the country's military troops have completed their exercises near the Ukraine border and will return to their permanent bases by May 1.

Shoygu said that the grand-scale exercises, which involved 60 ships, over 10,000 troops, around 200 aircraft and 1,200 vehicles, "fully achieved" goals by "demonstrating the ability to ensure reliable defense of the country."

Several western countries previously urged Russia to relocate its troops after tensions near Donbass were renewed with the start of the latest exercises last week. However, calls for dialogue from Germany and Ukraine followed shortly after.
