Russia vows to honor Ukrainian regions' referendum results

The Russian Foreign Ministry vowed on Wednesday to "take action" soon to honor the "aspirations of the residents" four Ukrainian regions that voted in referendums to join Russia.

The ministry insisted the referendums in the Donetsk (DPR) and Lugansk People's Republics (LPR), as well as those in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, were held "in full compliance with the norms and principles of international law" despite Ukraine and the West calling them "sham" and refusing to accept their results. "Despite the provocations of the Kiev regime, which issued criminal orders to inflict massive artillery strikes on crowded places and civilian objects, people were not afraid to come to the polls and express their will," the ministry claimed.

Earlier in the day, the European Union proposed imposing new sanctions against those who "organized and facilitated the sham referenda" in Ukraine's occupied regions. Meanwhile, official referendum results showed that all four regions voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining Russia.
