Russia warned Erdogan about coup

Russian intelligence reportedly provided crucial information prior to the military uprising in Turkey, warning Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan about the upcoming coup, Arab media sources reported on Wednesday. According to the reports, unnamed diplomats in Turkey’s capital Ankara allegedly stated that Turkish intelligence MIT received a clear warning from the Russians hours before the start of the military putsch last Friday.

Russia’s intelligence interceptors possessed information that a number of helicopters were deployed on Friday evening and were heading towards Marmaris where President Erdogan was vacationing. The intelligence said the chopper operation was aimed at arresting and killing the current president.

Following the coup attempt, over 9,000 people were arrested and 50,000 were suspended due to their alleged involvement in the military attempt to overthrow Erdogan and his government.
