Russia warns of looming military coup in Venezuela

Russian Foreign Ministry warned on Thursday about an increased likelihood of a military coup in Venezuela, which is becoming a "priority" of the Western countries. The ministry's spokeswoman Maria Zakharova went on to accuse the United States of opting for a highly confrontational scenario in Venezuela and encouraging the Latin American country's military to rebel against the regime led by President Nicolas Maduro and side with the opposition leader Juan Guaido.

Regarding the issue of humanitarian aid convoys to Venezuela, Zakharova described them as a "provocation" being prepared in the border city of Cucuta in Colombia. She urged the international community not to politicize the issue of humanitarian aid and stressed that all urgent supplies should be deployed through the United Nations office in Caracas, with respect for international norms.

"Let us not be deceived, or deceive others — a provocation, including with casualties, is being prepared under the guise of a humanitarian convoy. And it is needed as a pretext for a forceful action from outside. And everyone should clearly understand this," Zakharova stated. "We consider it urgently necessary to refrain from steps and statements that could provoke an escalation of tension in Venezuela, in particular, any appeals to the Venezuelan armed forces fraught with their involvement in internal civil confrontation."
