Russia will respond to EU sanctions - foreign ministry

Russia will respond to the sanctions recently imposed by the European Union in relation to the Kerch Strait incident, according to Russian media reports.

In a statement released on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry said that Russia would not leave the EU's actions "unanswered" and that it was "astounded" by the bloc's "hypocrisy and cynicism." It added that the allegations that Russia violated international law and "unreasonably applied force" are untrue and that the border guards involved acted in full accordance with international law and the Russian constitution. The ministry also noted that the EU's decision indicated "disrespect" for Russia's right to protect its border.

The European Council yesterday imposed sanctions on eight individuals in response to the incident in the Kerch Strait that took place last November, when the Russian Federal Security Service coast guard fired upon Ukrainian vessels attempting to pass through the strait into the Sea of Azov. Moscow maintains that the incident was a provocation from Kiev ahead of this month's elections in Ukraine.
