S. Arabia, Iran held talks on repairing ties - report

Saudi Arabia and Iran held talks this month in an effort to repair bilateral relations, the Financial Times reported citing three officials familiar with the matter.

According to the unnamed officials, the first round of the talks which took place in Baghdad on April 9 was described as positive. The second round of talks is scheduled for next week, the report noted.

The two countries cut diplomatic relations in 2016 after Riyadh executed Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr which led to protests and an attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran. The reports of discussions with Saudi Arabia come amid Iran's talks with Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action's (JCPOA) signatories, including the United States, in an effort to salvage the 2015 nuclear agreement.
