Samsung's personal care robot gets certified

Samsung's GEMS (Gait Enhancing and Motivating System) Hip has been certified in South Korea, the company announced on Monday, adding that the certification makes it the first company in South Korea to register a personal care robot. GEMS Hip helps people who have trouble walking and is worn at the waist to increase walking speed and save the wearer's energy. GEMS Ankle and GEMS Knee also exist.

"The certification will allow us to bring robots closer to our daily lives and enhance their accessibility and utility. We will utilize this momentum to further drive our commitment in robotics research, Head of Robot Center at Samsung Research Sungchul Kang said.

GEMS Hip has been certified in line with ISO 13482, the International Organization for Standardizatiion's requirements on the safety requirements for personal care robots, especially physical assistance robots, person carrier robots and mobile servant robots. Additionally, Samsung Electronics also received ISO 13482 for safety of machinery.
