Scholz voted in as German chancellor

Social Democratic Party (SPD) leader Olaf Scholz (pictured) was voted in on Wednesday as Germany's new chancellor.

Scholz was elected with 395 votes in the Bundestag, surpassing the 369 needed for an absolute majority in the country's parliament.

The traffic light coalition, consisting of the SPD, the Free Democratic Party, and the Greens, is the first three-party governing alliance in Germany, and Scholz is replacing Angela Merkel after her 16 years in office.
