SCOTUS Justice Breyer confirms retirement plans

United States Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer confirmed in a letter to US President Joe Biden on Thursday that he will retire when the court rises for the summer recess, likely in June or July, thus confirming earlier media reports.

"I enormously appreciate the privilege of serving as part of the federal judicial system," Breyer said in the letter. He added that he expects his successor to be named before his retirement takes effect.

Biden is expected to give remarks on Breyer's retirement shortly. The justice's successor will be Biden's first Supreme Court nomination since assuming office in 2021. His predecessor Donald Trump appointed three justices during his time in the White House.
