Sen. Graham asks Trump to reopen govt for 3 weeks

United States Senator Lindsey Graham said he asked US President Donald Trump to reopen the government temporarily, but that Trump refused. The Republican chairman of the Judiciary Committee told Fox News he urged the president to suspend the partial government shutdown for around three weeks.

"I tried to see if we could open up the government for a limited period of time to negotiate a deal, and the president says, let’s make a deal, then open up the government. He’s not going to give in," Graham said. The senator stated last week that Trump should declare a national emergency and use his powers to fund the wall on the Mexican border, the main point of contention between the president and Democratic lawmakers. The shutdown, which started on December 22, is now the longest in US history.
